چکیده

This study examined individual and status recognition in dyadic interactions between crayŽ sh and determines how blocking the release of urine, a known source of chemical cues, may in uence recognition. Behavioral characteristics of agonistic interactions were compared between crayŽ sh pairs that fought each other previously (familiar) and pairs derived from individuals with past status history but no previous experience with one another (unfamiliar). To address the role of urine born chemical cues in recognition, Ž ght dynamics were examined in urine blocked and non-blocked familiar and unfamiliar pairs. Our results indicate the existence of status recognition in crayŽ sh as Ž rst Ž ghts were longer than second Ž ghts and the statistical interaction between Ž ght number and familiar/unfamiliar treatment was similar. Urine cues play a role in social recognition in that Ž ghts are longer and more intense when urine cues are absent than when urine cues are present. Communication of behavioral state through urine appears to play an important role in the agonistic interactions of crayŽ sh.

Evolution of invasive traits in nonindigenous species: increased survival and faster growth in invasive populations of rusty crayfish (Orconectes rusticus)

The importance of evolution in enhancing the invasiveness of species is not well understood, especially in animals. To evaluate evolution in crayfish invasions, we tested for differences in growth rate, survival, and response to predators between native and invaded range populations of rusty crayfish (Orconectes rusticus). We hypothesized that low conspecific densities during introductions into...

Optimizing sampling effort to detect rusty crayfish (Orconectes rusticus) in southern Ontario rivers

The distribution and status of native and non-native crayfish are monitored across hundreds of lakes in Ontario (Canada). However, a corresponding effort has not been undertaken in flowing waters. Reliable and efficient sampling methods are essential for the detection of new aquatic invaders and tracking the spread of existing invasive species. In this study, a recent dataset for the invasive r...

Hybrid zone dynamics and species replacement between Orconectes crayfishes in a northern Wisconsin lake.

Hybrid zones that result in the genetic assimilation (replacement) of one species by another are underrepresented in the animal literature, most likely due to their transient nature. One such zone involves the rusty crayfish, Orconectes rusticus, and its congener O. propinquus. Orconectes rusticus was recently introduced into northern Wisconsin and Michigan lakes and streams, where it is hybrid...

The ultrastructure of spermatozoa in three species of cambarid crayfish, Cambarus robustus, Orconectes propinquus, and Orconectes rusticus, were studied and compared with eight previously studied species from different crayfish families using morphological features and biometrical data. The ultrastructure of spermatozoa show a generally conserved pattern including an acrosome and nucleus in the...
